Accessible ASCII art and memes

Published on

Every month there seems to be a new ASCII art meme floating through Twitter. From bunnies holding signs to words in the steam of teacups, we have been making text based art since we could write.

The problem with this, is that screen readers cannot read ASCII art or memes. It becomes an incomprehensible jumble of letters and punctuation.

    This is cute
      but not
     accessible

But you don’t have to go through life with ASCII animals holding signs, take a screenshot of the art and caption the art.

ASCII art of a bunny holding a sign with “This is cute and accessible” on it.

The alt text for the above sign bunny is “ASCII art of a bunny holding a sign with ‘This is cute and accessible’ on it.” And yes, I just realized I misspelled the word accessible in the screenshot.

So go forth and talk about tea, bunnies, and DNA tests. Art makes the world better.
